The artist I presented was Leo Villareal. He is known for a lot his light installations and sculptures. In his website he states, "My work is focused on stripping systems down to their essence to better understand the underlying structures and rules that govern how they work. I am interested in lowest common denominators such as pixels or the zeros and ones in binary code. Starting at the beginning, using the simplest forms, I begin to build elements within a framework... Inspired by mathematician John Conway's work with cellular automata and the Game of Life, I have sought to create my own sets of rules. Central to the work is the element of chance. My goal is to create a rich environment in which emergent behavior can occur without a preconceived outcome."
I really enjoy and am fascinated with what he creates because it is combining technology and art. He uses technology to his advantage in order order to draw us in with something as simple as light. I also found it quite accurate when he compared his pieces to people being mesmerised by fire, because it's true. His installation pieces and sculptures are made without a set pattern yet our mind wants to figure out a pattern and causes us to just stare and get lost.
