Ode to Espoo
Espoo
Espoon
Espoon keskus
That place beyond eternity
Where souls are lost beneath concrete
and songs are sung at karaoke
Cauldron of cultures
defined by Polish master plans
begun, abandoned, left to rotten
Sounds of demolition sire new beginnings
Master plans are drawn anew,
but strokes are guided by delusion
Can a place be forced to be a city?
Can a place be named and then exist?
Can it be that there's no centre,
there's no Espoo at this grid on charts?
Espoon keskus are you lost?
Or will I find you in my dreams,
in the memories,
of futures past.

Mapping Proximity
Dear All,
I'm one of those people who never visited Espoo before this course. (Except Ikea of course, but I think we can all agree that ikea is somewhat an autonomous municipality itself.) Since I only had a limited chance to see around Espoo myself, I decided to make a through research on the internet and gather some information. The only prominent data I managed to get was Espoo being 'the second largest city in Finland' which I already knew. Although promoting being a large city is questionable in itself, I found promoting being second at something more amusing.
The most significant asset of Espoo seems to be its proximity to Helsinki and all other traits are presented relational to that. Even VisitEspoo lacks photographs of Espoo and the website itself is not very enticing either, I would say.
On our first meeting, the official responsible for the area's development said people don't come to Espoo unless they really need to and they want to somehow change that.
With taking all these into consideration for our mapping assignment, I decided to create a draft for a local tourism campaign for Espoo. I tried to handle this 'proximity as an asset' issue with a twist.
Evidently I'm not a designer so please take this as an idea sketch and I had to post it small because of the blog's format so you can't really read it. Please also note that I don't own any of the images, I couldn't give credit properly since they were already anonymously posted in promo sites.
See you on friday!
Sinem
