Welcome to 2015 course
This year our focus will be the Kamppi Shopping Centre and its immediate surroundings in the centre of Helsinki. We are fortunate to be allowed to work inside the shopping centre, allowing us access to the everyday life of this contemporary agora or market square. The public/private nature of the shopping mall raises questions about ownership and access – who is allowed to be within this space, what can be, or what should you do there, who is welcome? The area surrounding Kamppi includes Helsinki Art Museum and Tennispalatsi, Lasipalatsi, Kamppi Chapel of Silence, and Narinkkatori. Eduskuntatalo and Kiasma are also close by. Metro and bus stations link Kamppi to the surrounding suburbs and funnel thousands of workers through the area each day. A multicultural mix of people will be found at any time in this area, ranging from office workers and politicians, students and families, to the unemployed and immigrant beggars.
